Honeysuckle and Bracken

Ali Walker

I absolutely love this part of planning a painting - the intricacies of arranging the design and playing around with different elements and bits of tracing paper! To me the these 'rough' drawings are works of art in themselves and if it wasn't so expensive I'd get them framed!

Starting to paint - very exciting but a bit scary!

It's always nerve wracking putting paint to paper;

especially watercolour, which isn't a very forgiving medium. It's not easy to fix mistakes so taking it slowly is often the best approach. I like to imagine the time it took for each flower and leaf to grow and this helps me to slow down.

These honeysuckle flowers and stems were striking in the way they were growing alongside the bracken in mid August. They complemented each other beautifully; the sinuous honeysuckle climbing upwards through the stiffness of the bracken.
